Programs and Celebrations During International Education Week

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
HOW TO GET INVOLVED     IEW Home

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit their reflection papers for a competition celebrating International Education Week (IEW), November 12-16, 2007.  Former US President Bill Clinton initiated IEW in 2000 as a celebration of international education and intercultural understanding.  This year’s theme, announced by US Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, is Fostering Global Citizenship and Respect.

The theme of the reflection paper is “Why Is Global Citizenship Crucial in the 21st Century?”  Submissions should express the writer’s vision and perspective on this theme and include the following criteria:

  • an understanding of what it means to be a global citizen, creating a sustainable future;
  • a knowledge of how global citizenship relates to 21st century issues;
  • an understanding of the complexity surrounding world issues;
  • an analytical approach to the subject matter; and
  • examples of critical as well as creative thinking.

Four prizes will be awarded, two each in the undergraduate and graduate categories.  Each first-place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate for the MTU Campus Bookstore; the two second-place winners, a $50 gift certificate for the Campus Bookstore.  Participants will be invited to a reception at which winners are requested to read highlights of their papers, and all will be awarded a certificate of participation.

The extended deadline for submissions is November 1, 2007.  Entries should be 3 to 5 pages in length (typed, double-spaced, bullets allowed) and may be submitted via hard copy or email attachment to Donna Armistead, International Programs and Services, dlarmist@mtu.edu
