Michigan Technological University is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse environment and culture where voices and people from all ethnicities, religions, races, cultures and ages are valued and respected. Based on the University's mission, the President’s Office took an initiative and charged the Office of International Programs and Services (IPS) to develop information, resources and activities to highlight holidays around the world. IPS was funded by the President’s Office and Student Affairs Division to hire an intern who is playing a leadership role in researching and collecting necessary information about major holidays and festivals celebrated all over the world. Tamasin Yarina a Biological Sciences undergraduate student of Michigan Tech invested three months in finding out updated information by communicating with members of Michigan Tech community who represent diverse religions and cultures. In addition, she conducted thorough research on religious calendars, major festivals, countries where these festivals are celebrated and significance of religious holidays in different parts of our global village. This web link is dedicated to information and resources about major religious holidays and cultural festivals around the world. IPS urges members of the Michigan Tech community to contribute additional information and resources to enhance our knowledge and understanding of global diversity and sensitivity to diverse perspectives. Community members can send additional information or any corrections or updates to ips@mtu.edu. IPS also plans to organize special exhibitions about holidays each semester. Every year, at least two major celebrations of diverse holidays will be offered. In Fall 2008, "Holidays Around the World" will be celebrated on December 5, 2008, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the MUB. Various religious and cultural organizations of the campus and local community will participate in offering information and resources about the holidays of the fall season. Ethnic food representing diverse cultures will be served. Community members interested in reserving an information booth at the event can e-mail ips@mtu.edu
