Program Extension Information

In order to complete your studies at Michigan Tech and maintain your legal status in the US, you must have a current I-20. You can check item #5 on your current I-20 to determine when your program began and when it is expected end. This end date becomes the expiration date of your I-20.

If you are not going to be done by this date, you must apply for a program extension. We recommend that you apply for an extension at least 30 days before the end date on your I-20. Failure to do so could jeopardize your legal status in the US, interrupt your studies, and put you out of status.

Procedure for obtaining a program extension

  1. Download the Program Extension Form here or pick one up at the IPS office.
  2. Have your academic advisor complete the Academic Advisor's Recommendation form.
  3. Obtain proof of financial support for the additional time you will be at Michigan Tech.
    • A bank statement
    • An MTU assistantship letter
    • A sponsor letter
  4. Submit your application in the IPS office.
  5. Allow 3 – 5 days to process your extended I-20.
  6. The IPS office will inform you by email when your I-20 is ready to pick-up.
